Overhauling a ball mill gearbox we didn’t build: YTL Cement, Malaysia

The main challenge was pinion timing. On a dual-pinion drive, both self-aligning output pinions must mesh with the girth gear in phase. If they don’t, load is shared unevenly and wear goes up. LGD Engineering developed a timing calculation program for this specific drive, so the timing could be set by calculation.

We also replaced all spherical bearings on the input and pinion shafts, and the CARB bearings on the floating shafts.

The work was completed within the shutdown window, and the mill went back into operation on schedule.
