34 years of reliable operation: planned replacement of a MAAG CPU-38 at Cemento Cruz Azul
At the Cemento Cruz Azul plant in Hidalgo, Mexico, a MAAG Gear CPU-38 gearbox recently reached an impressive milestone: 34 years of continuous service. Installed in 1992, the unit had operated reliably ever since, supporting the plant's production day after day. This month, the gearbox was replaced – not because it had failed, but because the customer chose a proactive maintenance strategy to ensure maximum reliability and avoid unplanned downtime.

A Smart Approach to Asset Management
The decision reflects a growing focus among cement producers on preventive maintenance and long-term asset management. Replacing critical equipment before failure occurs lets plants schedule service activities, minimize production interruptions, and avoid costly emergency repairs.
The newly installed MAAG CPU-38 gearbox is designed for more than 100,000 operating hours, providing the reliability and performance required for years to come.
The original gearbox, meanwhile, is far from retired. It will undergo a complete overhaul before returning to service as a standby spare – enabling future changeovers in hours rather than days of lost production.
Complete On-Site Replacement in Less Than One Week
The project was executed by the MAAG field service team under the leadership of Bart Foremniak, working alongside trainees William Cassiano and Luiz Costa. Together, the team completed the entire replacement in under a week, including:
- - Site measurements and technical assessment
- - Base frame replacement
- - Removal of the existing gearbox
- - Installation of the new CPU-38 unit
- - Precision alignment and commissioning support
Reliability Built to Last
A gearbox running continuously for 34 years is a testament to robust engineering and well-planned maintenance. This project shows how proactive maintenance decisions help cement producers maximize equipment availability, reduce risk, and maintain uninterrupted operations.
